Americans could see severe weather from derecho

By Kelly Franson

A derecho is a long-lived squall line of thunderstorms that "bows" as it moves forward, meaning you see an arc instead of a straight line on the radar.  This leads to widespread straight-line wind damage.  By definition, the wind damage swath of a derecho extends at least 240 miles.

Will a derecho form Wednesday?  It's very possible in the upper Midwest and Ohio valley, but we won't really know until the system develops. Regardless, severe storms are expected in that area, with wind damage likely, along with possible tornadoes.

In our part of the Carolinas, a stray storm is possible Wednesday, but the bigger story is heat.  We're headed for the 90s everywhere outside the mountains.  With the humidity, the peak heat indices (what is actually feels like), will peak in the mid to upper 90s.

Tar Heel Girls State going on now at Catawba College

SALISBURY - It's going on right now, the 74th consecutive year of Tar Heel Girls State, and for the twelfth year, Catawba College will host the weeklong session.

At the annual event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, several hundred girls from across North Carolina, all high school juniors who are academically in the top third of their class, will participate.  The Girls State program is a weeklong practical study of the structure and operation of North Carolina State Government.

In a non-partisan atmosphere, participants take a “hands-on” approach to learning how state and local governments function.  Citizens, as the participants are known, develop an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship by creating and living under their own mock government.

Teen signs off Facebook to go to jail for first degree rape

SALISBURY - A man is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center on a bond of $150,000 bond for a charge of first degree statutory rape.

Brandon Lee Shumake, 18, was booked into the jail just after 7:00 pm Tuesday night.

On his Facebook page Shumake says he is a firefighter with a local volunteer fire department.  His most recent post is from late Tuesday afternoon and it simply says "Off fb for a while bye everyone i love u babe"

According to the report at the Rowan Sheriff's Office, Shumake is accused of twice having sex with a girl who was 11 years old at the time.

Deputies say the investigation began when a student at a local middle school showed another student a picture on her phone of male genitalia.  A teacher found out about the picture and reported it to the principal.

Protecting your home from the ‘silent killer’

Protecting your home from the ‘silent killer’

After the recent carbon monoxide scares this week, emergency responders want to make sure your family is safe from the "silent killer."

"It's the silent killer. You can't see it, you can't smell it and you don't know it's there," said Keith Watts, Gastonia Fire Department.

According to the United State Consumer Product Safety Commission , "On average, about 170 people in the United States die every year from CO produced by non-automotive consumer products. These products include malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, ranges, water heaters and room heaters."

The Safety Commission also points out that the initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu.
