SALISBURY - Dr. Sanford Silverburg, professor of political science at Catawba College, is one of the judges in the 2011 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The International Law Students Association of Chicago, Ill. coordinates the competition, now in its 52nd year.

Woman reports attempted robbery at ATM

SALISBURY - A Salisbury woman has reported that someone tried to rob her at knifepoint at the Bank of America ATM at the Salisbury Mall during the middle of the morning on Friday.

The 26 year old victim told police that while she was using the ATM, a woman walked up from behind the ATM, telling the victim that she was desperate and that she had a knife in her pocket.  She demanded that the victim give her $50.

The victim did not see the knife and simply drove away.

She described the woman as white, in her 40's or 50's, wearing a tan suede long overcoat with the hood pulled up.  The woman had brown hair, according to the victim.

After the robbery the victim reported the incident to mall security and they contacted police.

Is Bigfoot a Tar Heel? Salisbury man sets out to find out

SALISBURY, N.C. (AP) - Is the legendary Bigfoot a Tar Heel? A Salisbury man thinks so, and he's trying to prove it.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Michael Greene plans to lead an expedition Saturday in search of Bigfoot in the Uwharrie National Forest in Montgomery County.

Greene says he shot three minutes of video of a creature he thinks was Bigfoot in the national forest two years ago.

A crew from the cable channel Animal Planet will join the expedition. The channel is making a series on reputed Bigfoot sightings around the country.

If the fabled animal is in the Uwharrie, it's doing a good job of hiding. At just under 79 square miles, it's the smallest of North Carolina's four national forests.

Al says snow in the forecast, but don't get too excited yet

Al says snow in the forecast, but don't get too excited yet

CHARLOTTE - A couple of low pressure systems will impact the area today, mostly in the form of rain, but the rain could change over to snow later tonight for the mountains, where 1-2 inches may accumulate.  No watches, warnings or advisories are out now, but I could see a winter weather advisory being issued for the mountains this afternoon.

A short sunny, dry spell kicks in Tuesday, before we turn our attention to the next system to impact our region Wednesday night and Thursday.

At this point, the models do suggest it would be cold enough for snow, and that’s what is in the forecast starting late Wednesday night, but the models also have major variations in strength and timing, and as of right now, with the trend of weaker, more suppressed low pressure (farther away from the WBTV viewing area) it does not appears that this will be a major storm for us.

SALISBURY - A new songwriting course is now being offered through the Community Music Program at Catawba College. The course will combine the study of lyricism, melody, harmony, and form to create original compositions. Students will learn how to compose songs using different chord types and techniques of lyric writing.

Blakley Leonard, a native of Abingdon, Va., who currently attends Catawba College as a Music Business major, will teach the eight-week course. The course will be offered from 6-6:50 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning February 15, and is ideal for musicians looking to further their knowledge of music and discover ways in which they can utilize their talents through original works.

Students may bring a guitar to class or use the piano to assist them, however, it is not required that they have playing knowledge for either instrument.
