Lack of driver's license lead to drug charges

Lack of driver's license lead to drug charges

SALISBURY - A man's lack of a driver's license led to a traffic stop that then resulted in police finding drugs.

On Wednesday while on patrol, Salisbury Police officer A.L. Bouk spotted a tan Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling on Bringle Ferry Road.

With the help of his computer access to DMV in his patrol car, Bouk discovered that the registered owner of this vehicle did not have a valid driver’s license.  As a result, a traffic stop was conducted on Long Street near East 11th Street.

As he walked up to the car Bouk's nose picked up a strong odor of marijuana.  Bouk also found that the driver, Antoine Herndon, was in fact, without a license.

SALISBURY - Convicted sex offender Donnie Fleming didn't tell the Rowan County Sheriff's Department that he was no longer living at the address he had given them on his release from prison.

Now they won't have to look far to find him, he's in jail under $30,500 bond for failing to notify the sheriff of a change of address.

Fleming was apprehended on Thursday by Salisbury Police.  His car was stopped for having a burned out tail light.  When officers searched Fleming they found a small bag of white powder that they say proved to be cocaine.

When the officer entered Fleming's name into his computer it revealed the warrnat for failing to register as a sex offender.

Fleming, 34, has an extensive criminal record that includes a conviction for second degree rape.  Convicted sex offenders are required by law to have their current address on file with the sheriff's department in their home county.

Over the last few weeks deputies have been attempting to verify the names and address of everyone on the sex offender registry in Rowan County.  When they can't match a name with a place, an arrest warrant is issued.

Lots of empty desks this week in Rowan-Salisbury Schools

SALISBURY - Schools in Rowan County are reporting a lot of empty desks this week.

On Thursday there were 112 students out sick at Southeast Middle School, normally there are only around 30-35 absences.  It's the third straight day of 100+ absences for Southeast.

"It affects the continuity of the school," said Principal Louis Kraft.  "If you've got 30-40% of your students out of the building here and 20 out of a classroom it's difficult to stay up with their students in the classroom."

The flu and nasty colds are making the rounds.  Doctors and teachers are advising parents that if a child has a fever or other symptoms, he or she should stay home.

Susan Thomas, the district's health nurse, confirmed that absences are being noted throughout the system:

SALISBURY - Students at Catawba College may not fully understand the protests occurring in Egypt, but they’ll be much more aware of the situation should their wallets be affected. This was the consensus of a forum, “Insights into Egypt,” whose members Wednesday night, Feb. 2, discussed the impact of the protests in Cairo.

The event was sponsored by Catawba’s Department of History and Politics and included Dr. Michael Bitzer, an associate professor and department chair; Dr. Sanford Silverburg, a political science professor who is an internationally recognized expert on the Middle East; Dr. Gary Freeze, a history professor; and Freeze’s son Matt, who spent six months at American University in Cairo.

The impromptu forum, Bitzer said, was organized late Tuesday afternoon at the request of students who wanted to learn more about the developing story in the Middle East. “It was very much a last-minute thing,” Bitzer said. “We sent out a mass e-mail and put up flyers. It made perfect sense for the department to do it.”

More than three dozen students attended the 9 p.m. forum to listen to the panel’s remarks and ask questions.
