Man killed after crashing into Food Lion big rig

SALISBURY - The man who died Sunday morning in a crash with a Food Lion tractor-trailer has now been identifed as 23-year-old Antonio Jerome McCoy of Cleveland, NC.

Police say McCoy may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

An accident reconstruction team determined that McCoy was driving a silver Honda Civic on Jake Alexander Boulevard Sunday morning just after 7 am, going towards I-85 from the Statesville Boulevard area.

Prison escapee on the run for 3 years calls police, gives up

SALISBURY - A 51-year-old man who had been living on the streets in Salisbury called police and waited for officers to pick him up.

Michael Dunn, who is originally from Alaska, was wanted for escaping from the Hide County, Mississippi, Correctional Facility in 2007.

On Friday, just after noon, Dunn called police and told them to meet him at the corner of Majolica Road and Norris Drive.

Business Hall of Fame to honor four

SALISBURY - Catawba College’s Ketner of Business will host the fourth annual Business Hall of Fame Saturday, November 6 in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus. Four outstanding business leaders will be inducted at the event.

Inductees include Paul E. Fisher of Salisbury, Richard “Dick” J. Seiwell ’67 of West Chester, Pa., Jim L. Williamson’54 of Charlotte, and the late Lotan Corriher of Landis, who attended Old Catawba College in Newton from 1891 to 1892.

Trunk or Treat at First Baptist Sunday

SALISBURY - First Baptist Church in Salisbury hosted the annual Trunk or Treat party Sunday afternoon at the First Ministry Center on N. Fulton Street.

The Trunk or Treat theme this year was "Under the Big Top," but hundreds of children, and even quite a few parents turned up in all kinds of costumes, from Lady Gaga to the more traditional vampire and cartoon characters.

Children got bags full of candy and enjoyed dozens of games on the lawn and in the gym, including some big inflatables.

Neal Wilkinson made dozens of laps for kids and adults in an antique fire engine.

Man charged for assault on the handicapped and cruelty to animals after golf club attack

SALISBURY - An incident in Rockwell on Orchard Road left one man with injuries and another in jail for several charges, including an alleged attempt to kill a dog inside a car.

According to the Rowan County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to a call at 104 Orchard Road around 10:30 Wednesday morning.

There they found Miles Rhodes in an an ambulance.  Rhodes said he had been attacked by his brother Eric Burton.   Rhodes said that Burton got into an argument with him and hit him in the head with a golf club.

Rhodes had gash approximately two inches long in the top of his head and other "defensive marks" on his arms.

Fire destroys Highway 601 home

SALISBURY - A small house that sat back a few hundred yards off Highway 601 north of Salisbury was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.

The home was located in the 5200 block of 601 at the end of a long dirt driveway in an area near Pop's Country Store.

The first calls to 911 came from neighbors around midnight.  By the time the fist firefighters from Franklin Volunteer Fire Department arrived, the was house was nearly engulfed in flames.

Investigators are working to determine the cause.  There were no reports of injuries.

Salisbury Belk's makes the switch

SALISBURY - The Belk store in the Salisbury Mall is sporting a new look in the form of the new logo that the company is using.

Belk recently began changing signs and logos on all the stores.  It's part of a new branding and marketing campaign designed to update the store's image.
