Sheriff: Impaired driver hits cars while children unloading in school parking lot

SALISBURY - According to a report at the Rowan Sheriff's Office, a man turned the parking lot at Morgan Elementary School into his own personal demolition derby.

When a deputy responded to a call about a drunk driver just after 7:30 Friday morning, he found several people standing in the school parking lot pointing at a red Chrysler with body damage and all four doors open.

31-year-old Justin Dwayne Harwood was inside that car, sitting on the console. 

Harwood was shaking and quivering and having difficulty speaking, according to the report.

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - Arthur Stiller doesn't deny that his daughter has had her troubles.
 
Just over 10 years ago Angel Stiller was convicted for taking indecent liberties with a child.  Stiller was sentenced to 24 months probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.
 

4 racehorses killed in Rowan barn fire

SALISBURY - Four champion barrel racing horses were killed early Tuesday morning in a barn fire in the community of Woodleaf.

Fire crews responded to a report of a barn fire on Wetmore Road just after 3:30 am Tuesday morning.

When fire crews arrived at 1815 Wetmore Road near Highway 801 they found the barn 50% involved in flames, the barn was destroyed.

Five horses were inside the barn, four died. 

The fire started in the tack room, but is not considered suspicious.  The exact cause has not been determined.

The horses belonged to Woody Brown who is well known in the barrel racing world and as publisher of the Cleveland (Rowan County) Chronicle.

Groundbreaking for the Yadkin River Bridge

SALISBURY - It may be one of the most long awaited highway projects in years, one that will benefit drivers across the southeast.

On Wednesday officials will break ground to replace the Yadkin River Bridge on I-85 that spans Rowan and Davidson counties.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will break ground at 10 a.m. Wednesday on phase one of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project.

“Turning over the first shovel of dirt on this project will be a historic moment,” N.C.

3 sex offenders wanted on outstanding warrants, sheriff says

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The Rowan County Sheriff's Office is looking for three sex offenders who have outstanding warrants.

Deputies are looking for 50-year-old James Terry Hosch of 3410 Statesville Road in Charlotte, 34-year-old Anthony Tryon Pressley of Salisbury, and 37-year-old Angel Yvonne Stiller of 165 Zeb Street in Salisbury.

More rain, flooding potential Monday

CHARLOTTE - Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire viewing area through midnight.

A solid, 1 – 3 inches of rain fell Sunday and Sunday night and more rain is expected today and tonight as several areas of low pressure ride up a long a stalled front that essentially bisects the WBTV viewing area. 

"Mistakes Madeline Made" opens at Catawba

SALISBURY - Catawba College is offering a unique performance this week.

Chris Herring provided this description to WBTV: Take a break from the everyday monotony of the office as you enjoy Catawba College’s inaugural performance of the season, “The Mistakes Madeline Made,” a coming-of-age comedy about an office of people with unusual problems.

The production will be offered at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 28-29, and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, September 30 – October 2 in Hedrick Theatre on campus.

Directed by Dr. Woody Hood, Professor of Theatre Arts and Dean of the Shuford School of Performing Arts, “The Mistakes Madeline Made” is not about Madeline at all.
