Changing overtime pay for some workers?

Changing overtime pay for some workers?

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- There could be a new way to pay employees who work for the private sector.  Members of the House have passed a bill to change overtime pay.  The law would give employees the option to either get overtime pay or comp time.

Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger favors the bill and thinks this will empower families to take time off when needed - time that will best fit their schedule.

"You may have young kids at home," Pittenger said. "Or go to a soccer game and you may need to go to the dentist or you have aging parents. This is a good bill for hard working American families. It gives those choices back to the families and employees."

While Pittenger thinks this will help families, some hourly workers are not so sure.

SALISBURY - NC Representative Harry Warren (R) represents Rowan County in the North Carolina legislature.  Each week Warren produces a newsletter detailing bills that are working through the legislature of particular interest to Rowan County.

Here, unedited, is Warren's latest newsletter:

HB 515 – Amend Credit Union Laws.  This bill addresses various aspects of credit union membership, such as survivorship, joint tenants and accounts with minors.

HB 532 – No Drinking in EMS and Law Enforcement Vehicles. This is an act to make it a crime to operate an ambulance, law enforcement vehicle, or EMS vehicle upon any highway, street or public vehicular area within the state while consuming alcohol or while alcohol remains in the person’s body.

HB 610 – Modify Requirements for In-stand Beer Sales.  This bill reduces the seating capacity requirement and eliminates the population requirement for in-stand sales of malt beverages.  This will amend the General Statute 18B-1009 to allow the sale of malt beverages in the seating areas of stadiums, ballparks and other similar public places with a seating capacity of 3,000 or more (formerly 60,000 or more in cities with a population greater than 450,000) during professional sporting events, provided certain specifications are met.

Speedway saddles up Old West theme to promote May Race Weeks; X-Games to zMAX?

CONCORD - "It's a throw-down," exclaimed former All Star race winning crew chief Jeff Hammond.  Hammond was part of the group hosting a small rodeo in the infield of Charlotte Motor Speedway on Thursday.

It was a day of boots, bulls, and belt buckles, and even some horsepower you don't typically find at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

One of this area's biggest economic engines is set to roar over the next two and half weeks with thousands coming in for the All Star Race and Coke 600. New this year, a top prize of two million dollars.

"Two million dollars will go home with that team," said CMS President Marcus Smith.   "That's unmatched, not even close to any other race on the NASCAR circuit."

"Red Day" helps the community

SALISBURY - A lot of good was done on Thursday in a lot of communities across the country, and right here in Salisbury, by the Keller Williams Real Estate Company.

There are 80,000 KW agents across the US and Canada that gave back to the community with some sort of service project.

KW agents all over the region did projects similar to Rowan’s Day of Caring.  About 25 agents and some recruited lenders worked at Capstone Recovery Center on W. Innes Street,  trying to get that ministry ready to open its doors.
