About Us

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy was founded in 1993 by a group of parents who wanted the philosophy they admired at a much-loved childcare program to continue through their children’s elementary and middle school years. From the founding years to the present, our fundamental belief that children learn best when they are actively engaged and challenged has guided teachers and staff in the creation of a rich, child-centered learning environment that uses each student’s strengths as an avenue to learning. Our priority is teaching children to become lifelong learners with a passion for understanding and excellence. We do not teach to end-of-grade tests.

We believe that the early school years establish the foundation for lifelong intellectual and social growth. Therefore, our thoughtfully charted curriculum is specific and structured, but rich with opportunities for creative expression and maximizing “teachable moments”. We utilize the Core Knowledge Sequence, Everyday Math, Open Court Reading and (in the Lower School) Handwriting Without Tears, which combine to provide a thematic approach that integrates the study of language, math, social studies and science. Students also receive instruction in Spanish, Media (computer and library), Art, Music and P.E. For a more detailed discussion of the curriculum, please visit division and grade pages.

Our classrooms are visually appealing and provide a warm learning environment with furniture arrangements conducive to small group and individual learning. Grades Jr. Kindergarten through second have a lead teacher and an assistant, while grade three has a part-time assistant. Beginning in grade five, students have specialized instructors for each subject.

We aim to have children leave Salisbury Academy with a strong sense of self and with the ability to think clearly, function well academically and embrace the challenges of high school and college with confidence and resilience. Eager students, engaged minds, supportive and participative parents, dedicated teachers and staff combine to create the thriving, energetic and caring place we call Salisbury Academy.

Testimonials

Our teachers are phenomenal, and over the years they have created a wonderful learning environment for OUR children. Melody and I feel so blessed to have Allison, Alex and  Abby in this environment. You and your staff's work does not go unnoticed, and we, as parents, are so fortunate to have such a great school in Salisbury to provide a foundation for our kids at such an impressionable time of their lives. As I am sure you already know, our kids, when they leave here, are more than ready to take on the challenges of public education, and it is due, in no small part, to the caring people we have charged with their lower and middle school education. Salisbury Academy, in our minds, is not just about the books, but it is also about the relationships that are forged and the values that are instilled while walking those halls. We can say, in our case, we could not ask for better mentors for our children than the ones they had at Salisbury Academy. Brian Lee Alumni and Current ParentSalisbury Academy has been instrumental in preparing our three daughters in all perspectives for a successful future. The strong academics enabled them to begin high school well prepared and ahead of the game in several subjects. The emphasis on positive character reinforced our family values in a time when society and peer pressure can be quite challenging. And the athletic program was the perfect combination of challenge, fair, and fun! Our daughters graduated with a strong foundation that they have continued to carry and build upon in high school and college and into the future. Tricia JohnsonAlumni Parent
