SALISBURY - Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will hold a community-wide student empowerment event this week with premier motivational speaker and educational specialist, Kenston J. Griffin.
“Impact Day is about committing and recommitting ourselves to making positive choices, becoming more academically disciplined and creating, obtaining, and maintaining respect,” said Gary Bigelow, dean of industrial engineering and head of the college’s minority male mentoring program, M.I.S.T.E.R.
Impact Day, Thursday, April 19, will kick-off with a live performance from the Livingstone College band and short step teasers from multiple Greek fraternities and sororities at 10:45 a.m. in the courtyard at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s North Campus. Students will then move into the college’s Teaching Auditorium to hear from local leader Mayor Mary Ponds of Granite Quarry and Kenston Griffin until 1:00 p.m.
“Impact Day is geared at motivating students to believe that they can be successful beyond any obstacles,” said Dennis Rivers, program coordinator for the M.I.S.T.E.R. program. M.I.S.T.E.R. is an acronym for ‘Men Inspiring Success Through Education & Role-Modeling.’ “The motivational speaking that Mr. Griffin has done for the NBA and NFL should hopefully be a draw for participants from the community.”
Addressing the importance of education, the event will provide students with an opportunity to experience educational, personal, and professional development as well as inspire, motivate, and empower them.
Mr. Kenston J. Griffin is a premier educational specialist, best-selling author, top performing trainer and coach. Mr. Griffin is an internationally known keynote speaker for educational systems, the NFL, NASCAR, NBA, Fortune 500 Companies, faith-based, and federal/judicial systems. He has also worked with entertainers such as Toby Keith, Ludacris, Tim McGraw, Soulja-boy, Bow-wow, and Lil Wayne.
The M.I.S.T.E.R program and Student Life are organizing the event which is sponsored by a Student Impact grant from the Rowan-Cabarrus Foundation.
Surrounding K-12 schools, including North Rowan High School, South Rowan High School, and Henderson Independent High School are busing in students for Impact Day.
