Jay's Journal: Carolina Brotherhood Run rolls on

SALISBURY - Salisbury Fire Department Batallion Chief Jay Baker is on the road this week as part of the Carolina Brotherhood Run.  It's a bicycle ride from Wilmington to Asheville to pay honor and raisine money for an Asheville firefighter show died in the line of duty one year ago.

From the road, here's an update from Jay and Charlotte Fire Department Captain Rob Brisley:

Day two of the five day cycle ride from Wilmington to Asheville, N. C.  is complete after battling a heat index over 100 degrees. However the 86 heat wave miles covered were very moving for the Carolina Brotherhood ride members.

Early today, the route was changed to pay tribute at the funeral for slain master Police Officer Jeremiah Montgomery of the Lumberton Police Department. Officer Montgomery was gunned down on July17th serving and protecting his community.

Late this afternoon, following a typical summer thunderstorm; a moment of reflection was taken by all riders and support team at the memorial site of a tragic fire that took place in Hamlet, N.C. on September 3, 1991.  Hamlet Fire Dept assistant Chief Calvin White, who was first on scene, shared with the members what took place on that difficult day when 25 lives were taken by a horrific fire. More importantly, Chief White spoke about what it means to be a firefighter in any community across our country.

Day three will have the ride going through Anson and Union County and finishing up at the Charlotte Firefighter Association Union Hall, the “Palmer Building”. Thursday takes us to Forest City, N.C. and Friday the journey will end at Asheville Fire Department station #1 in honor and tribute to Captain Jeffery Bowen whom this inaugural ride across North Carolina is dedicated to.

The 30 riders’ wish to acknowledge the incredible support this committed ride has received from every community along the way.
