Children's home runaway charged with stealing truck

SALISBURY - A 16 year old who had just been brought to Nazareth Children's Home in Rockwell is now charged with stealing a truck form a nearby business in an attempt to runaway from the home, according to the sheriff.

Tracy Carpenter had been brought to Nazareth from Stanly County on Monday.  According to the report, Carpenter was searched when he arrived and was found to have 16-17 rounds of  .270 caliber ammunition.  A sheath for a knife was also found in his pocket, but the knife was not found.

According to the report, Carpenter also told deputies and officials that he would not be staying at Nazareth.  An hour later an alarm on the door sounded and Carpenter was gone.

Deputies arrived to begin searching for Carpenter.  According to the report, they noticed a broken fence at a business next door, and the gate to the fence knocked to the ground.  Moments later an abandoned semi truck from the business was found stopped in the middle of the road in front of Food Lion on Highway 52.

Deputies began searching for Carpenter and did find him a short time later running towards a wooded area behind Johnny's restaurant.

Carpenter was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and damage to property. He was being held under $10,000 bond.
