New scam shows up in Rowan

SALISBURY - A Rowan County man didn't fall for a scam that could have cleaned out his bank account.

Instead, he reported it to the sheriff's office.

Tommie Taylor walked into post office in Faith to pick up his mail.  He noticed an unusual letter that contained a check made out to him for $1277.43.  There was also an explanation letter saying Taylor had been selected for a part-time job by a company called Digital Research.

The letter explained that the money went to cover expenses associated with the job.

Taylor told deputies that he had never heard of the company and felt like it was a scam.

Knight in shining armor pilfered from home

SALISBURY - Deputies in Rowan County are on the lookout for something unusual: an antique statue of a knight.

Someone stole the knight from the home of Barry Hepler of 139 Cone Drive, where the knight had been standing guard in front of an oak tree in the front yard.

Hepler described the knight to WBTV as "a 5 1/2 tall, metal statue, man with a helmet with a feather, a shield, sword, body armour, leg armour, it's the whole thing."

Update: Undercover prescription drug bust

SALISBURY - 8 people were booked into the Rowan County Detention Center beginning earlyTuesday morning, all facing serious drug charges.

Among those arrested are Michael Beck, charged with maintaining a dwelling for the purposes of selling drugs, trafficking heroin, and drug possession.  Beck's bond is $25,000.

James Burr is charged with drug possession, maintaining a dwelling, and trafficking heroin.  Burr's bond is $25,000,

Julia Jenkins faces charges of maintain a dwelling, possession of drug paraphernalia, drug possession, and trafficking heroin.  Her bond is $20,000.

George Jones is charged with trafficking heroin, conspiring to traffic opium, and drug possession.  Jones bond is $25,000.

Shane Joyner is charged with trafficking and drug possession with the intent to sell, his bond is $15,000

Drunken fight over Air Force vs. Marines leads to shooting

SALISBURY - Which branch of the Armed Forces is better, the Air Force or the Marine Corps?

That question, and the ensuing debate, led to a 55-year-old man being shot early Sunday morning in Rowan County.

According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Randall Guillory, 55, went to visit the home of David Michael Binges, 49, on Sweet Gum Lane near Faith Road.

Deputies say the two began arguing over which was better, the Air Force of Marines, and that after Binges asked Guillory to stop talking about it five or six times, he went to his bedroom, loaded his 9 mm pistol, and brought it back into the kitchen.

According to the report Binges told Guillory, “I’ve got a gun, and it’s time to leave,” and then the two began wrestling on the floor, and the gun went off.

Hotel clerk shoved into closet during robbery

SALISBURY - A hotel clerk was manhandled, shoved into a closet, and threatened, according to police.

On Sunday morning, September 12, 2010, at 7:59 am, Salisbury Police responded to a report of a robbery at the Travel Lodge hotel located at 1328 South Jake Alexander Boulevard. 

The clerk told police that three black men, all wearing bandannas over their faces, had robbed the business. 

Officer sniffs funny smell in park; two arrested

SALISBURY - The discerning nose of Salisbury Police Officer Rebecca Sexton resutled in the arrest of two people on drug charges.

According to a police report, Officer Sexton was patrolling the area near the 100 block of Depot Street on Wednesday when she noticed the distinct smell of marijuana in the air.

Officer Sexton called for assistance, then began to follow her nose.

The smell led to the small park near a large fountain at the corner of Depot and Innes.

Facebook used to help plot women’s clinic bombing, authorities say

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - A Concord man accused of providing information on building explosive materials to a potential bomber is behind bars in Greensboro.

According to U.S. Attorney John W. Stone Junior, 26-year-old Justin Carl Moose was arrested Tuesday on charges of providing information on how to make a bomb to a person he believed was planning to bomb a women’s health clinic in North Carolina.

Moose used Facebook, a social networking site, to advocate violence against women’s healthcare clinics, according to the criminal complaint, specifically locations where abortions are performed and the healthcare professionals employed at these facilities.
