Woman accused of kidnapping elderly victim to commit fraud

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) - A Salisbury woman is accused of kidnapping an elderly woman to commit fraud and sheriff's investigators say there may be other victims. 

On August 17, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate a missing 82-year-old female suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The woman's family said she was seen leaving her home earlier that morning with a white female in a dark-colored car.

The elderly woman was returned to her home the next morning by Karen Staton, 42, of 470 Paige Drive, Salisbury.

Staton, however, told investigators she found the 82-year-old female at Wal-Mart and brought her home.

During the investigation, the sheriff's office learned that Staton had cashed one of the victim's checks in June.

The sheriff's office said Staton already had a charge of habitual felon, and exploitation of the elderly, pending in court.

Great-grandmother charged with sex crimes, now charged with assaulting victim

SALISBURY - A 72-year-old Rowan County woman who is already facing charges of sex crimes involving a 7-year-old boy, is now charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and intimidating or interfering with a witness.

Juanita Byars had been out of jail on bond, but was charged again by deputies after this incident.

According to the sheriff's report, Byars assaulted a witness in the sex crime case, in fact, deputies say she threatened to kill the alleged victim and his mother and threw a brick at them.

SALISBURY - A Salisbury woman has learned a costly lesson about a deal that sounded too good to be true.  It wasn't.

Police say someone contacted Florentina Carvajal over the phone on August 11 with an offer for a satellite TV dish and a full year's worth of programming for only $320. 

9 sentenced in multi county break-in ring

SALISBURY - 9 people who were responsible for hundreds of break-ins in several counties have now been sentenced.

The man considered the "ringleader," Michael Chad Bowers, is going to prison for 27 years.

In August, 2009, sheriffs from 10 counties in North Carolina, 2 in South Carolina and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, held a press conference in Stanly Couny to announce that a break-in ring responsible for stolen property worth nearly $1,000,000 had been rounded up.

"There are no boundaries for criminals," Stanly County Sheriff Rick Burris said on the day of the press conference in 2009.

Earl Woodham of the BATF announced the federal indictment of nine people for firearm and conspiracy law violations.

125 firearms were recovered from the break-ins, including revolvers, rifles, shotguns, semi-automatic handguns and black powder rifles and revolvers.

Purloined Pekingese pooch reunited with owners

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Dog gone is now dog home!

One woman's prized Pekingese puppy was snatched from the parking lot of an Old Navy store in Salisbury, but early Tuesday night there was a tearful reunion.

The circumstances in the case are a little unusual and the woman is anxious to see her beloved "Caramel" again.

"I understand that you love her too, she's easy to love, but these girls had her first and they love her and they just want to get what's rightfully theirs back," Ayana Thomas told WBTV.

Her daughters, 11 year old twins Tasha and Chanel Sturdivant, should be excited about the first day of school , instead they are heartbroken over the loss of their beloved Pekingese puppy named Caramel.

"She's the princess of this household," said 11 year old Natasha.   "We keep her like she's our little sister and a family member, and all we really want is our dog back."

Man shoots, kills neighbor's pet dog

ROWAN COUNTY - A Rowan County man has been charged with animal cruelty after deputies say he shot and killed his neighbor's pet chihuahua.

Samuel Wright, 41, was arrested Monday afternoon after he told Sheriff's deputies that he shot Otis, the pet chihuahua, when it came into his yard along the 100 block of Ashcraft Lane in western Rowan County.

Wright told deputies that he'd asked his neighbor, Kerry Worthy, multiple times to keep Otis away from his yard.

On Monday afternoon, deputies say a friend of Worthy's, Tammy Smith, came to the home to let the dog out and Otis went into Wright's yard. 

Rash of copper thefts hit Rowan

SALISBURY - Copper thefts are on the rise in Rowan according to a report from the sheriff's department.

"It comes and goes," Sheriff Kevin Auten told WBTV.   "It's like the catalytic converters, popular for a while, it died down, picks back up, recently, unfortunately, it has picked back up."

In the last few days, there have been reports of copper theft from a Verizon tower site on Morris Farm Road, an air-conditioning unit from a home in Mt. Ulla, three A/C units from a Gold Hill church, and an A/C unit from a home on Trentham Drive.
