Update: Victim of beating and robbery worried for his future, closing his store

SALISBURY - Two brothers are behind bars in Rowan County, accused of twice robbing and beating an elderly man inside of his business on Highway 29.  On Wednesday that man was talking about the robberies and how his life has been forever changed.

Gerald Burkhart is playful with his customers. He loves people, and there's a reason for that.

"Last year I lost my wife and I'm trying to recover from the loneliness of that and keeping busy and active," Burkhart told WBTV.   "I thought I had done well here until I came upon something I could not control."

What he couldn't control were those people who sought to take advantage of him for his age, or his hearing loss. On Friday Burkhart was robbed and roughed up a bit, according to the sheriff.

Need for weed and speed puts woman behind bars

SALISBURY - It started out as a routine traffic stop for a speeding Kia Soul on I-85 early Tuesday morning, but the unmistakable smell of pot created a different scenario for police and the couple in the car.

Salisbury Police Officer Andy Carlton was on 85 Tuesday morning when he noticed the Kia going 80 miles an hour.  As the officer stopped the car, he noticed that all the windows were rolled down.  Odd, Carlton thought, since the temperature at the time was in the 30's.  But after a few seconds Carlton's nose told noticed the "strong odor of marijuana" coming from the car.

According to the report, Carlton asked the driver and passenger if there were drugs in the car.  The passenger, Alexis Faye Mitchell, 22, of Charlotte, handed Carlton a small marijuana cigarette.  Mitchell then showed Carlton more drugs in the car, including 37 grams of pot and some hashish in a Tupperware container.  Rolling papers and digital scales were also found in the car.

Kennel owner now charged for faking dog's health certificates

SALISBURY - The owner of a dog kennel in Rowan County has now been charged with obtaining property by false pretenses for forging health certificates for dogs that he was selling across the country through a web site.

Kevin Settinieri runs Right Puppy along with his daughter Danielle Settinieri.  Danielle Settinieri, 17, was charged last week.

Investigators say the father and daughter obtained a health certificate for a healthy dog, then forged that certificate to use with other animals who were not healthy.  One of the dogs turned up sick at a veterinarian's office in Florida.

Last week Rowan County Sheriff Kevin Auten told WBTV that he was concerned that the sicknesses reportedly suffered by the dogs could be transferred to humans.  Such diseases are called "zoonotic."

Kevin Settinieri was booked into the jail and then released on bond.  The sheriff says that the investigation continues and that there could be more charges.
