"Ten Days of Speed" underway now at Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD - Every year, Charlotte Motor Speedway packs as much entertainment as possible into the 10 Greatest Days in Racing to give fans an experience that they’ll never forget. From the excitement on the track to pre-race concerts, the expansive Play Zone and a moving salute to our nation’s military, fans that come to Charlotte will be sure to create memories that will last a lifetime.

While you’re in town, be sure to check out these can’t-miss opportunities that you can only find at Charlotte Motor Speedway!

Fan Zone: Every trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway should start with a visit to the Fan Zone. Located at the speedway’s main entrance, the 10-acre Fan Zone is a one-stop shop for race souvenirs, interactive displays and so much more. Fans can visit the Sprint Experience for driver appearances, photos with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series trophy and an autograph from Miss Sprint Cup.

Spring Photowalk set for Saturday

SALISBURY - From Rowan Public Library: The Rowan Public Library invites people of all ages and skill levels to participate in a Spring photowalk event on Saturday, May 18th at 10:00 am at RPL Headquarters (Salisbury).

A photowalk is just as it sounds--an opportunity for a group of people to go on a walk with the express purpose of taking photos together.  For our photowalk, we’ll start at the library and head downtown, where we’ll see sculptures, murals, historic landmarks, and more.  Staff will be available to assist you along the way.  Feel free to return with us to the library for light refreshments, or plan to stay downtown and grab a bite to eat for lunch. 

Please bring at least one camera per family.  Be sure to charge your battery beforehand, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the walk.  In the event of inclement weather, the photowalk will be cancelled.

SALISBURY - The W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury will celebrate National VA Research Week on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in the Building 6 Learning Center.  Current and recent past research projects will be on display in the Learning Center foyer from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The key note address will be given by Janet Niemeier, Ph.D., A.B.P.P., Carolina's Healthcare System on "Evidence-Based Interventions Following Traumatic Brain Injury" in  building 6, Learning Center, 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

CONCORD - From Charlotte Motor Speedway: It’s difficult to overstate just how big the 10 Greatest Days in Racing are at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with fans from around the globe tuning in to watch NASCAR’s best battle for up to $2 million at the Sprint All-Star Race and endure the season’s toughest test of man and machine at the Coca-Cola 600.

“In the next two weeks, hundreds of thousands of fans will attend race events at the speedway, enjoy Food Lion Speed Street and visit area race shops and the NASCAR Hall of Fame,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “The motorsports month of May brings a worldwide spotlight to Charlotte and a high-octane boost to tourism that may be unmatched anywhere in the country.”

Dedicated fans from all 50 states and as far away as Queensland, Australia will travel to the heart of NASCAR country to take in all the excitement of back-to-back weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Who wants to Go Pro with Steve Smith?

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

"Jiggy with the Piggy" BBQ Challenge in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS - Over 60 cook teams from across the country are coming to Kannapolis May 10-11 to compete in the inaugural Jiggy with the Piggy Barbecue Challenge.

“We are thrilled to have more than double the average number of competition teams for a first-time event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Teams consist of professional pitmasters and backyard grillers representing five states. Over 80 professional KCBS judges from eight states are coming to Kannapolis judge for us,” comments Deputy City Manager and event organizer Eddie Smith.

Teams check in all day Friday, firing up the grills for a People’s Choice Wing Tasting on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and People’s Choice Pork Tasting on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

SALISBURY - Dads and kids, bring Mom downtown from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, May 11, the Friday before Mother’s Day, for Downtown Salisbury’s annual Spring Night Out!  This free family-friendly event offers activities, live entertainment, and great shopping for all ages!

Stroll the sidewalks of Downtown and enjoy live music on East Fisher Street by Jeremy and Jess Vess from 5:00pm-7:00pm for the Brick Street Live Pre-Party Event.  At 7:00pm the first Brick Street Live concert of the year takes place on the 300 block of North Lee Street featuring a fan favorite, the Tim Clark Band.

Check out the Classic Cars on North Main Street or load the entire family on the Trolley for a free spin around town. Register for the First Presbyterian TWAM Run or hop aboard a horse drawn carriage for a unique view of historic downtown.
