SALISBURY - He lives in South Carolina, but a million dollar lottery winner works in Rowan County, at Freightliner.
Six tickets sold in the Carolinas came close to winning Wednesday's highly anticipated Powerball - with a record jackpot of $587.5 million.
Three of the tickets worth $1 million were sold in North Carolina - one of them at the Circle K on Selwyn Avenue in Myers Park.
Fourteen other tickets sold in North Carolina matched the numbers on four of the five white balls plus the number on the Powerball and are worth $10,000 each.
Another three tickets were sold in South Carolina - one at the MR Express on Nations Ford Road in Rock Hill.
That one belongs to Jerry Rucks, who was warming up his truck to go work Thursday morning when he remembered to check the sticky note where he jotted down the winning Powerball numbers from Wednesday night.
Hucks, a truck builder for Daimler Trucks in Cleveland, NC, went back inside the plant and a coworker looked the Powerball ticket over and told him he won $1 million.
"I didn't even have the truck door locked, and I had a $1 million ticket out there," he told lottery officials when he arrived today to collect his winnings. "Then I can't believe I let three or four guys at work hold my ticket and google the numbers screaming, ‘It's a $1 million.'"
His parting words to them: "I'm not quitting, but I'm not working anymore overtime."
He called his girlfriend to tell her the news and that he was headed home. She was worried it was taking him so long, but at one point he had to pull over to throw up, overcome he beat the 1 in 5,153,633 odds to be a millionaire.
An unprecedented 140,000 winning tickets were sold in the Palmetto State totaling $5.3 million. These winners took home anywhere from $4 up to the $2 million prize.
More than 269,916 tickets in North Carolina won prizes totaling $4.8 million.
Wednesday night's winning Powerball® white ball numbers were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and red Powerball of 6.
Lottery officials advise players to sign the back of their winning tickets.
