Child celebrates first birthday, parents refuse to give gifts

SALISBURY - Did that headline get your attention?  It's accurate, but there is a catch and it isn't as bad as it may sound.

Usually a child's birthday party is a festive occassion in which the child can indulge in box after brightly colored box of unknown treasures.  While still festive, Jacob Cleaton's first birthday party will be a little different.

"Our youngest child is turning 1 at the end of the month," Tiffany Cleaton told WBTV.   "And we have chosen to make his birthday a pay it forward birthday."

"This is in large part to the generosity of friends Karen and Michael Hanzlik. We have chosen 3 local nonprofit groups to donate to. The donations will directly benefit children in our area."

"Basically our son is not getting any gifts for his birthday.  We have had a $500 donation already in his name to a local food bank, and  other donations have come in as well.

Comm Barber: Farm To School Calendar contest winners announced

SALISBURY - From Rowan County Commissioner Jon Barber:

Good day all,   As we recognize our Rowan-Salisbury School students, teachers, and parents as winners of the NC Farm to School calendar artwork contest, this achievement is just as important as a team or individual winning a state athletic championship.   I like to refer to them as North Carolina's "best athletes of artwork."   The following students and teachers, out of thousands of entries across the state, have been chosen the "best athletes of artwork" in a state wide artwork competition for the NC Farm to School annual calendar and will be recognized at the May 20th County Commissioner meeting.
