"Buddy the Wonder Dog" is now home

"Buddy the Wonder Dog" is now home

SALISBURY - They might start calling him "Buddy the Wander Dog."

Radio personality Kent Bernhardt says his dog, Buddy, is now safely back home after running away when fireworks started going off late Monday night.

The black lab mix had a pretty good trip.  He was found in the Westcliffe neighborhood, several miles from his Meadowbrook home.

Bernhardt, the Morning Show host on WSTP Radio, had put out the plea for folks to be on the lookout for the missing dog.  He even walked out of the studio during his show on Wednesday and Thursday mornings to check out "buddy sightings," leaving Sports Director Howard Platt to take over.

On Thursday it turned out to be the real thing, and Buddy was found.

"My thanks to everyone who helped us locate him," Bernhardt posted on Facebook.   "We have a caring community full of wonder

SALISBURY - One of two dogs missing after being frightened by fireworks on Monday night has been safely located.

"Lily," the border collie is now back home and safe.

"She was dirty, scared, her foot pads are very very tender and sore," Lily's owner Juliah Smith told WBTV.   "She was limping on one of them, she was covered in ticks, I pulled several ticks off of her, she just was...terrified."

Juliah says Lily may have traveled 10-12 miles.  Her collar was found in the parking lot of Ivan's Restaurant, Lily's home is near downtown Salisbury near Church Street.

Kent Bernhardt's black lab mix, "Buddy, the Wonder Dog," is still on the loose.  Bernhardt is asking neighbors in Milford Hills, Milford Knoll, Meadowbrook, and the Crescent to help in locating the dog.

SALISBURY - Over his years in local radio, WSTP morning show announcer Kent Bernhardt has done more than his share of "lost dog" announcements.  Today, he did another one and it was much more personal.

Bernhardt's beloved black lab mix that he calls "Buddy, the Wonder Dog," became frightened at fireworks that were going off in the Meadowbrook neighborhood where Bernhardt lives on Monday night.

Buddy took off and hasn't been seen since.

Bernhardt believes the dog is still around and hopes someone can find him.  He believes the dog is still in the area, probably in Meadowbrook, Milford Hills, or the Crescent.

On Wednesday morning someone called in, on the air, to tell Bernhardt that the dog had been spotted near N.

Deputies looking for pony thieves

SALISBURY - A Rowan County man has reported the theft of a pony from his backyard.

Deputies have no leads or suspects in the case.  They're asking anyone with information to call 704-216-8700.

Money available for community gardens

CHARLOTTE - The goal: to plant 1,000 gardens and green spaces across the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018.  The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company wants to make that happen and today launched a new program called GRO1000, offering $1,500 grants to deserving communities and organizations in the hopes it will get people involved in creating more community gardens and green spaces where they call home.

“Something happens when communities grow and learn together,” said Jim King, ScottsMiracle-Gro’s senior vice president of corporate affairs. “People develop a sense of pride and accomplishment when they get involved in cleaning up their neighborhoods, growing flowers, or cultivating their own healthy local food, and we want to help them get the job done.”

Communities interested in pursuing 2011 GRO1000 grassroots grants can apply online at http://thescottsmiraclegrocompany.com/GRO1000 by March 31, 2011. Projects should include the involvement of neighborhood residents and foster a sense of community spirit.

Cats found shot in the head, dumped out on Leonard Road

SALISBURY - Veteran Animal Control officers say it's one the most shocking cases of animal cruelty they've ever seen, and now they're trying to find who could be responsible.

"We had a call, lady called in saying that there were eight dead cats out on the side of the road, Leonard Road," Clai Martin, Rowan County Animal Control Supervisor told WBTV on Thursday.

"There was a box out there, we feel like the cats were dumped in the box, put on the side of the road.  My officer responded, when my officer got out there the box was flattened, the cats were laying on the side of the road.  There were eight cats and there was an opossum. What we found when we brought them back here was that all but one had been shot in the head, between the eyes.  We feel like the cats were probably trapped and then shot."
