Makeba Bonner rents a house in Charlotte, where she lives with her 11 year old son. But her dream is to own her own home.
“I'm just ready,” she says. “Ready to move. It means a lot for me and my son.”
Bonner works for Walmart. She's been with the company for almost a decade, and she says she has the income to make mortgage payments. What she doesn't have is a nest egg to make that all-important down payment.
“Lots of people need a little bit of help with that down payment,” she says.
Wells Fargo actually agrees. The nation's largest mortgage lender will launch a program in Charlotte this month called Neighborhood Lift.
Marie Day Hayes is a senior vp in the bank's mortgage department and she says Wells is making a multi-million dollar effort to lift the local housing market by giving people down payment grants worth $15,000.
