SALISBURY - Two people have been charged in a bizarre incident that involves a hard luck "out of gas" story and stolen guns.

According to the report at the Rowan Sheriff's Office, it all started on Wednesday.  A man who lives on Hurley School Road called deputies to report that when he arrived at his house just before 6:00 pm, he found a woman standing in his carport.  The woman was identified as Penny Monroe, 36, of 411 Webb Road.

The homeowner then saw a man come walking out of his house.  That man was identified as Russell Samples, 40, of 411 Webb Road.

Monroe told the homeowner that the door was open and that Samples simply walked in.  Samples told the homeowner that his car had run out of gas.  The homeowner agreed to take Monroe to get gas.  Once this was done, Monroe and Samples left the house.

Urine trouble now: Woman in high-speed chase on I-85 causes three wrecks, wets herself in police car

SALISBURY - A woman from Apex took law enforcement officers from three counties on a wild ride on Interstate 85 Tuesday night, according to the report at the Salisbury Police Department.

Jessica Manuszak, 27, of Apex is currently under evaluation at a local hospital, but is facing charges of driving while impaired and felony flee to elude arrest.

Salisbury Police got involved just after 7:00pm when an officer driving on Jake Alexander Boulevard noticed a silver 2007 Pontiac G6 going more than one hundred miles an hour south on 85 near Jake Alexander Boulevard.  The officer clocked the car at a top speed of 118 miles an hour.

The officer also noticed that the driver appeared to be throwing small white pieces of paper from the driver's window and sun roof.  When the officer turned on his sirens and blue lights, the driver did not stop but kept heading south, swerving from lane to lane, forcing several other drivers off the road.

SALISBURY - Sgt. Amerson of the Rowan County Sheriff's Office thought something looked a little strange.  He saw a scooter moving along with traffic on W. Innes at about 35 miles an hour.  The problem was that the scooter wasn't on W. Innes Street.  It was on the sidewalk.

Sgt. Amerson said the scooter, and it's driver, Gussie Lee Jeter, Jr., 47, stayed on the sidewalk for at least a block, then Jeter swerved into oncoming traffic.  Amerson said he saw several drivers swerve to get out of the way of Jeter, and that Jeter then made his boldest move; swerving across four lanes of traffic without even turning his head or looking to see if the coast was clear.

Sgt. Amerson then turned on his blue lights to get Jeter to stop, which he did, at the intersection of W. Innes St.

Reporter notebook: Salisbury is kind of like Sleepy Hollow-wood

Reporter notebook: Salisbury is kind of like Sleepy Hollow-wood

SALISBURY - Even if the show will end up on another network that we dare not speak of, it's kind of exciting to see the process of movie making take place in downtown Salisbury.

Well, by movie making I mean a bunch of stuff in and around downtown Salisbury that isn't usually there.

For several hours each day downtown Salisbury is being transformed into something completely different. A film crew from 20th Century Fox is shooting a TV pilot called Sleepy Hollow. It's a modern retelling of the classic Washington Irving story.

And while there are some inconveniences for locals while filming is going on,  most folks are pretty excited to see Hollywood come to town.

Wait, isn't that a New York state flag flying over St. Luke's Episcopal Church?  But why does the church have a new name?  And where did this cemetery come from? It looks old but it wasn't there last week.

Smelling too good leads to man's arrest

Smelling too good leads to man's arrest

SALISBURY - Police officers often have highly trained noses.  They can recognize the smell of illegal drugs, a recently fired gun, or in this case, cologne.

According to a report at the Salisbury Police Department, that highly trained sense sniffed out drug charges for Dustin Stirewalt, 20, of Grace Church Road.

Police were helping with a traffic checkpoint in China Grove on Highway 29 on Saturday night.  When Stirewalt drove up, SPD Officer J. R. Cable noticed "the strong odor of freshly sprayed cologne."  Cable searched the car and discovered marijuana and pills.

Stirewalt was charged with three counts of drug possession and placed in jail on $5000 bond.  He has since been released on bond.

Naked man "grunting like zombie" hospitalized after trying to break into house

SALISBURY - The residents of the house on Morlan Park Road in Salisbury didn't quite know what to make of it.

Early Friday morning they called police to report that they could hear a man's voice and a "banging" sound outside. The residents said someone was trying to break into the house.

When police arrived they didn't quite know what to make of it either.  The encountered a white man, approximately 60 years old, buck naked and bleeding.

According to the report, the nude dude was sitting on a large flower pot.  As police tried to talk to the man, he "fell off the pot onto his side on the ground."
